Sheffield Beach is located on the Dolphin Coast among the northern suburbs of KwaZulu-Natal. It is the furthest North ‘resort town’ on the Dolphin Coast. The area has since become considered a suburb as the Dolphin Coast continues to grow and expand. This cosy suburb borders Salt Rock and is situated a mere ten minutes from the energetic buzz of Balitto, and less than an hour from the Central Business District of Durban. Sheffield Beach is peppered with guesthouses, bed and breakfasts, and self-catering flats to accommodate the floods of tourists each year. Its proximity to the airport makes it a convenient stop for tourists and residents that commute via aeroplane. Although, compared to the other beaches in Durban, Sheffield Beach is relatively small; it is renowned for its incredible reef and subsequent variety in sea life. Dolphins are seen in this area all year round and in June and December whales frolic and breach in the waves too. The beach itself has natural structures that create an adventurous playground for families. The striking rock pools and sheltered coves attract curiosity and many happy hours are spent peering into the pools and their various crevices, nooks and crannies at the colourful sea creatures within them. The warm, temperate Indian Ocean allows scuba divers and snorkelers to swim out to the well-known reef a few metres off shore that supports a plethora of fish, crustaceans and other spectacular sea life. Spear fishing is also popular in this area as there is an abundance of crayfish, mussels and oysters on the reef. (Enthusiasts must obtain a license in order to partake in those activities). Sheffield Beach offers incredible views of the vast Indian Ocean and is a safe, friendly suburb for families to put down their roots.
