Simon’s Town is a coastal suburb situated along the Southern Peninsula of Cape Town. The town is set on the slopes of a mountain and has a fishing village feel as it surrounds a harbour and yacht club. The buildings along the main road are quaint Cape Dutch style buildings that accentuate the rich maritime history of the area. The South African Navy is situated here, in a naval base that has been active for almost 200 years. This area has been through British and French Occupation, the Anglo-Boer war and both the 1st and 2nd World Wars. To learn more about the history of Simon’s Town, the local museum, and naval museum offer regular tours. Along the cobble streets on the main road there are a variety of shops ranging from curios and clothing to fresh fish shops, great restaurants and coffee shops. Besides the South African Navy and Simon’s Towns history, the area is well-known for the African penguin sanctuary nearby on Boulder’s Beach, one of the only places where you can view an African penguin colony up close. There are many ocean-based activities to choose from in Simon’s Town, including; Apex shark expeditions, stand up paddle boarding, Cape Town water bikes, boat chartering and kayak trips.
