The village of Modderfontein was established in 1894, originally to house workers and their families that were attracted by the growing gold mine industry in Johannesburg. Modderfontein Nature Reserve is operated by the Endangered Wildlife Trust and serves to protect indigenous South African fauna and flora. This beautiful landscape consists of a shady picnic area and glistening dam where visitors can relax and enjoy the view. Visitors and residents can also book a day of fishing on the dam. The reserve has managed to create a natural open, public space which is socially, economically and ecologically sustainable, whilst still set in an urban environment. This 275-hectare park includes several dams, grassland and hills. For birdwatching enthusiasts, hides are also provided, making it ideal for bird photographers to capture the perfect shot. Cyclists and runners frequent the reserve too.
