If you love a house which has stories to tell, how about the tale of legendary Boer general, Christiaan de Wet, who evaded capture by leading his famous horse, Fleur, down into the cellar of a home in Fouriesburg? Because that house is still intact and now you can own it.

Constructed in 1898 this sturdy four-bedroomed, sandstone house retains its character. It stands proudly on a double plot which is adorned with well-established fruit and shade trees and 36 extravagant rose bushes.  It even maintains the original waenhuis (wagon shed.) A horse stable and thatch-roofed rondavel were added in 1920.

The traditional stoep is wide and welcoming, ideal for a sundowner or weekend braai.

Inside the traditional heart of the rural house, the lounge faces north and is just the place for board games, books, and music. Winter memories are made in the glow of the wide, ample fireplace. In contrast, make the most of your day in the adjacent sunroom which will serve wonderfully as a hobby room or office, or bedroom.

The passage leads to three spacious bedrooms, two of which have en-suite bathrooms with a shower, toilet, and washbasin each. Access to one of these bathrooms for the third bedroom will be easy to devise. A guest toilet is conveniently located in the passage.

The floorboards, doors and door frames are of well-seasoned Oregon wood.

The kitchen is large and cheerful and is arranged around the wood stove. It has roomy cupboards. Terracotta tiles cover the floor and the kitchen is connected to the dining room via a serving hatch.

A laundry room is reserved for the washing machines and dryers and storage.

Guests would be right at home in the rondavel which still has its original reed roof and has its very own bedroom and bathroom. It would also be a great addition to the house as a second living quarter. Ample space for building an extension on the second plot.

The old wagon and horse sheds have been converted into garages and a thatched-roof entertainment area with a built-in braai. It can readily be turned into a flat or guest quarters with one or even two bedrooms.

Water security is maintained with a 5,000-litre water tank which is served by an electrical pump. An outhouse is conveniently placed on the property.

Additional electrical plugs will make the addition of a generator a snap.

All of this old-world charm is right in the bosom of lively Fouriesburg, the undiscovered jewel of the Eastern Free State.
