In the Sotho language Gauteng means 'Place of Gold' Gauteng’s history lies in the discovery of gold in 1886. Since then the area has swelled with infrastructure, wealth and a populace of over 9 million people. Although it is the smallest province in South Africa, it houses the largest city, which is the thriving metropolis of Johannesburg. The largest stock exchange in Africa (the Johannesburg Stock Exchange) is found in Gauteng and this energetic province is responsible for a third of the entire countries GDP. This wealthy province is buzzing with economic growth, enterprise and development. Gauteng is the only landlocked province in South Africa and is situated on high altitude grassland in the Highveld. The two major cities in Gauteng are Pretoria and Johannesburg, each offer a completely different way of life. Pretoria has a more laid back feel, with wide jacaranda-lined streets and a quieter atmosphere, whereas Johannesburg is a dynamic, lively melting pot of culture, art and commerce.
