South Africa's northernmost province, Limpopo, is named after the great Limpopo River that flows along its northern border with Zimbabwe. The name Limpopo is derived from the Northern Sotho word meaning ‘strong gushing waterfalls.’ Limpopo is known for its coal fields, cattle farming, game hunting, platinum mines and wildlife. This Northern Province, with its rich cultural heritage, exquisite scenery and fascinating history, is bordered by Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Botswana. The capital, Polokwane, is a major agricultural hub as well as a commercial center with beautiful, grand historical buildings and African art exhibitions. The Arend Dieperink Museum and the Makapansgat caves in this province show fossils dating back to early hominids. The northern section of the renowned Kruger National Park is located in Limpopo. Elephant, buffalo, tsessebe, sable and an inundation of birdlife can be found there. The Soutpansberg features vast forests with hiking trails and plains with giant baobab trees sweeping northward towards Zimbabwe. There are many natural heritage sites and an abundance of animal life in Limpopo.
