Welcome to Durban, South Africa's 3rd largest city, overlooking the azure blue waters of the Indian Ocean. Situated in the historically rich province of Kwa- Zulu Natal, and home of the Zulu Kingdom; Durban is a port city, established in 1835 and named after Sir Benjamin D'Urban, Governor of the then Cape Colony. Durban has long been one of South Africa's favourite holiday destinations, owing to its tropical climate, exquisite family friendly beaches and of course, the International Surfing competition - The Gunston 500!
The Golden Mile is a swathe of tourist hotels, which hugs the beachfront shoreline from the Suncoast Casino Resort to uShaka Marine World and the harbour entrance. Traditional Zulu beadwork, baskets and crafts can be bought along here; which make for wonderful gifts and mementoes of one's visit to this glorious city.
Durban has a unique fusion of cultures which offers tourists an exciting array of experiences. The Victoria Street Market is an exotic and sensory delight! Opened by the Indian community in the 1870s, this is one of Durban's most popular culinary and spice trading hot spots. Home to the world famous "Bunny Chow" - a half loaf of bread with the inner taken out and filled with curry, topped with the soft centre - Durban's very own creation! Definitely something to tick off on a foodie's bucket list!
The Berea and Musgrave area suburbs are filled with architectural styles, showcasing the history of our city. From Cape Dutch, Victorian, Art Deco to French Mauritian and Mediterranean; all these beautiful homes and buildings are now preserved under the Amarfa Heritage Act of 1997.
To the west of the city, lies the popular lush green residential suburbs and towns of Sherwood, Westville, Pinetown, Kloof and Hillcrest; all part of the greater Durban area.
Umhlanga, the city's famous northern suburb, is an upmarket and vibrant hub, offering exquisite beaches, high teas on the lawns of its 5-star hotels, with panoramic views of the sea and city. Just behind Umhlanga, sustainable development has occurred to meet the needs of our vibrant and growing city. The Gateway Theatre of Shopping and its surrounds is a popular retail and entertainment hub, for residents and tourists alike.
Our new King Shaka International Airport, named after one of the Zulu nation's most revered Chiefs, lies amid the green sugarcane fields, just north of the city.
Moving further north, the Dolphin Coast is one of Kwa-Zulu Natal's many jewels. Spectacular beaches, surrounded by sugar cane fields, world-class game reserves with the Big 5; and of course, the Greater St Lucia Wetlands Park, World Heritage Site.
To the south of Durban lies the picturesque Hibiscus Coast. Dotted with towns and tourist attractions at every curve of the coastline, the south coast leads to the majestic Transkei coastline. Heading inland, just one and a half hours drive from Durban lies the majestically beautiful Drakensberg Mountain range, which is the backdrop to our amazing province.
